Energy Saving
Save Energy by E-Services
To effectively conserve energy, E. SUN promotes a full spectrum of e-services, thereby cutting back on the use of paper:
- Customers are encouraged to make use of such e-services as telephone and online banking, WebATM, and e-trading. Meanwhile, e-billing is adopted to replace paper statements, which will also reduce postal-related consumption.
- Customers are also encouraged to apply for automatic payment of bills, keeping to a minimum their travel to and from the bank and thus curtailing the bank’s carbon footprint.
- A comprehensive teleconferencing system is installed to accommodate one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many meetings across E. SUN Bank. In addition to making possible efficient communication, the practice goes a long way toward minimizing the time and costs of transportation and helping reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
Policy on Green Procurement
- Top priority is given to environmental friendliness in both consumption and procurement. A green cycle throughout the supply chain takes shape as recyclability and reusability are recognized as key considerations:
| A. |
Whenever possible, adopt green building materials and environment-friendly equipment and instruments in construction projects. |
| B. |
Procure reusable, recyclable, low-polluting and energy-saving products as much as possible. Refrain from the purchase of excessively packaged and environment-damaging products without the capacity for self-decomposition and of equipment costing more energy than others. |
| C. |
Procurement should take into account the principles of standardization and uniformity. Repetitive use is thus possible in the event of remodeling or redecoration going forward. |
| D. |
Procure products conducive to customer safety and convenience and considered to be deserving of a responsible corporate citizen. |
| E. |
Promote environmental protection and green consumption through procurement and other business dealings, soliciting business partners to achieve a maximized green cycle. |
- Fully committed to green consumption and procurement, E. SUN is one of the first local businesses to respond to the Environmental Protection Administration’s Green Procurement Made by Enterprises and the Public initiative. Its procurement is focused on products labeled with the EPA’s Green Mark and others regarded as environmentally preferable.
E. SUN procured approximately NT$35 million in 2010 from NT$24 million in 2008 of environmentally preferable products certified with the Green Mark, Energy Label, Water Conservation Label or Green Building Material Label. High on the chart of participating private enterprises, E. SUN was included by Taipei City’s Department of Environmental Protection in 2009 and 2010 as one of the private enterprises and organizations cited for their track record in green procurement. In 2010, the EPA also presented to the company an award in recognition of its being an excellent green buyer. While E. SUN Bank is happy to enjoy a boost to its public image, it is equally excited that its green procurement will contribute to upgrading Taiwan’s environmental protection industry and in turn helping preserve the environment itself.
Saving Energy Is Simple
Statistics show that such seemingly insignificant acts as moving up the temperature threshold just a bit for switching on air-conditioning or shortening the time of lighting at a business establishment will make a big difference between energy conservation and waste. E. SUN has done precisely that—at the head office and its 122 branches—and has been rewarded handsomely.
Since its Green Policy white paper was implemented, E. SUN has designated a room temperature that warrants the use of air-conditioning one or two degrees Celsius higher than previously accepted, reduced the illumination of its signboards by two hours a day, and turned off lights in non-business offices for one hour over lunchtime from Monday to Friday. To better conserve energy, it is also gradually replacing its current lighting fixtures with energy-saving T5 devices and is reducing unnecessary display lighting.
Promote Environmental Awareness
E.SUN has striven to instill environmental awareness as well as energy conservation and carbon reduction concepts among employees, who can be expected to put these into practice in their lives. Taking center stage are the so-called 4Rs: reduce, recycle, reuse and refuse. Initiatives adopted by E.SUN in this regard include:
- Employees are encouraged to contribute their share by volunteering for environment-related work.
- The 13th day of each month is designated E.SUN Environmental Awareness & Education Day. Volunteers in each unit will provide environmental protection-related information and education to colleagues.
- E. SUN encourages employees to give up their cars three days each month and ride public transport or bicycles instead, thereby reducing carbon emissions and conserving energy.
- Repay and befriend the community by joining forces with residents to translate environmental awareness into action.
